Henry Jenkins – Convergence Culture and Transmedia Storytelling

Henry Jenkins is the “Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Arts and Education ad the University of Southern California” (Jenkins, n.d.).

He is the author of several books, among which are Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture. (Jenkins, 1992), Science Fiction Audiences: Watching Star Trek and Doctor Who (Tulloch & Jenkins, 2005), Convergence Culture (Jenkins, 2006a), and Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers: Exploring Participatory Culture (Jenkins, 2006b).

([Textual Poachers (Jenkins, 1992/2012) cover], n.d.)
Jenkins’ research has centred around science fiction television fans, popular culture, fanfiction, and participatory culture, often deploying an ethnographic method to his research.

Jenkins’ work on fandom and “media convergence” was taught extensively by Professor Lincoln Geraghty during my undergraduate and postgraduate study, and the bulk of the content in this series comes from two of my essays written during this time.

The first forms a response to Jenkins’ definition of “fan culture” in Convergence Culture and the second applies Jenkins’ concept of “media convergence” and “transmedia storytelling” to Doctor Who (Moffat et al., 2005-2022).

The essays, when read back-to-back, are of considerable length. As such, they have been broken into chunks of roughly 500-750 words to be published here on jcablemedia.com throughout April 2025.

You can see all published posts in this series here.
